THE PATH 06 || June’s Sage

The Wisdom of Nothing

The Wisdom of Nothing

The Sage is in constant pursuit of wisdom and truth. Though she does not hold herself out as an expert, nor afraid to say, “I don’t know.” Besides, how does one ever really know what knowing is, anyway? Call it an intellectual humility, but the Sage does not claim to hold any answers or be smarter than anyone else. For it is clarity she seeks, not certainty.

Inside this month’s issue of THE PATH:
  • Āvidya // The ignorance of certainty.
  • Wisdom // Knowledge you cannot get from a book.
  • Understanding // Wisdom is not imparted from above, but  from under where we stand.
  • The Six Practices to Perfect // Understanding is grounded in generosity, ethics, patience, enthusiasm, contemplation, and emptiness.
  • Emptiness // The importance of space.
  •  Śruti and Smriti,  // Like two wings of a bird, the fundamentals of chanting.
  • Making Sourdough Bread: A combination of doing and sitting.
  • Space in the Garden:  How to grow tomato plants vertically.

Freedom

With a vitality and aliveness pulsing through her veins, the Wild One is thoroughly embodied, engaging with the world through all of her senses. She is instinctual, natural, and free to be herself. Instead, she remains true to herself, with a wildness that will not be tamed.

THE PATH 04 || April’s Goddess

In Flow

IN FLOW

The goddess represents the cosmic energy that moves through the universe in an endless ebb and flow, where life and death coincide, overlap, and merge. • Two Years // An essay on the passing of time.
  • Cyclical Living // Aligning our lives with nature.

THE PATH 03 || March’s Maiden

In Transition

YS 1.14 sa tu dīrgha-kāla-nairantarya-satkāra-ādarā-sevitaḥ dṛḍha-bhūmiḥ

Practice becomes firmly rooted when pursued with interest, sincerity, and after a long period of time.

IN TRANSITION

The Maiden is forever optimistic, eternally hopeful, and at times, dangerously naive. But only because she lacks the wisdom of age and experience. It is only through enduring challenges and finding her way through that the maiden can grow -- realizing her own inner strength and potential. Standing on the precipice of womanhood, the seeds of her maturation lie in the obstacles she faces.

Inside this month’s issue of THE PATH:
  • The Myth of Persephone // Why stories matter.
  • Learning to Swim // Learning to trust one's strength through challenges.
  • The Path of Endurance // Discovering what's possible... with a little help.
  • Mountains of the Mind // Nine hurdles we encounter on our climb.
  • Transitions // Remembering how to jump.
  • The Space In-Between // Taking our time through changes.
  • Spring Awakening // Ways to welcome spring.
  • Videos // Sculpting AUM with our voice and exploring transitions.

THE PATH 02 || February’s Lovers

The Harmony of Opposites

YS II.33 vitarka-bādhane pratipakṣa-bhāvanam
When disturbed or troubled by something negative, cultivate what is opposite.

IN UNION

The Lovers symbolize a harmony of opposites and the joining of two. Which isn’t to say they must be equal. Nor merge into one. Integration does not mean the one ceases to exist.  A perfect relationship holds space for both, sees the truth in both, and understands the value of both.

Inside this month’s issue of THE PATH:
  • The Hunger Moon // What do you yearn for?
  • Sun and Moon // Why the qualities that draw us together are often the ones that break us apart.
  • Yin and Yang // Cultivating the feminine in a masculine world.
  • Strength and Grace // Discovering a oneness through the coupling of opposites.
  • Goldilocks and the Three Gunas // A sattvic tale of what it means to be ‘juuuuust right’.
  • Earth, Wind, + Fire // Exploring balance through the principles of Āyurveda.
  • Fire and Water // Using our food as medicine.
  • The Standing Series // A guided practice to download

THE PATH 01 || January’s Child

One Step at a Time

YS I.1 atha yogā-anuśāsanam
Here we begin ...

Curious and playful, the Child symbolizes the wonderment of innocence and the energy of youth. Unmarked by the ‘scars’ of expectations and criticism, a child is free to be themselves, completely natural, without a thought to who is watching or listening. With an open mind and a fearless heart, She sees only what is possibility. No matter our age, the Child is integral to everyone’s nature and where we all begin.

Elements of Third Series

A guided class exploring and adapting postures of Ashtanga Yoga's Third Series.

Back in the day, Peg and I would practice what we called “Tour de Third” — a morning where she would practice Third Series and I would watch and try to mimic what she was doing. We wouldn’t do any of the “crazy” looking ones because we were just taking a tour! There was no pressure to look a certain way and I definitely fell out of my share of postures! During that time, I didn’t practice Third but those mornings were a time to have fun, to explore, and discover some shapes together.

This Elements of Third recorded online class was created in that same spirit. I’ve selected postures throughout the Third Series as well as moved some of them around as you’ll notice. On our own tour together, we take occasional breaks and a closer look at some areas to explore a bit more in depth the energy and options of working with certain forms. Then we continue on our way!

In other words, you do not have to be practicing Third Series to partake in this class. Though it is recommended that you have been practicing Second Series up through karandavasana for enough time to feel grounded and steady within that practice. But you do not need to be proficient in every posture.

Please use your best judgement and be aware of your body’s needs. Like I said before, in our Tour de Third, there was no pressure or expectation of a certain performance but rather a chance to discover and have some fun.

Completing the Circle: The Feminine Side of Practice

An Interactive ZOOM Discussion

Saturday, June 18th @10 am MDT

A YogaGivesBack Event

Saturday, June 18th @10 am MDT

Join YGB's Global Gathering for India, offering help to  impoverished women and children through education, scholarships, and small business loans. Please make your donation here.

Irrespective of gender, we are all an embodiment of both masculine and feminine energy. The masculine is logical, rational, and thinks in linear style; its energy is active, decisive, and achievement oriented. The feminine, on the other hand, is intuitive, creative, and values emotional connections; its energy is subtle, receptive, and cyclical. When both sides are equally honored, there is balance and harmony. When they aren’t, we become a bit lopsided. And most of us are a bit lopsided -- even in our yoga practice. Especially if our method, like today's culture, is already more masculine by nature.

Join Peg Mulqueen for this hour-long, interactive discussion exploring the subtler, feminine side of practice.

There is no charge for this event. Instead, once you've made your donation to YGB, simply register below.

Thank you so much!

An Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga’s Intermediate Series

A 90-Minute Yoga Class with Peg Mulqueen

An All-Levels Offering

Originally recorded especially for students who have been practicing Ashtanga yoga's Primary series for some time and would really benefit from postures within Intermediate -- this class is really for anyone. Even if you do not practice the Ashtanga Yoga method as there will be options and variations similar to those you might find in any all levels Hatha Yoga class.

Class is broken down into 4 parts: (1) standing series (the fundamentals); (2) the floor series, adapted from Ashtanga’s second series; (3) the backbending series, where students can work progressively, in a way that is challenging but also meets every student where they are; and (4) the closing series, followed by a short seated breathing meditation.

Join Meghan for what she likes to call The "Tradie" Practice - An hour-long practice merging primary & second series with added core exercises to maintain a healthy, flexible, and strong body.
